Diego Maradona: Soccer world pays tribute to one of the greatest players the world has ever seen

The world is mourning one of the greatest soccer players of all time, the Argentine hero Diego Maradona, who succumbed to a heart attack on Wednesday at the age of 60.

Argentina has begun three-day national mourning in honor of the 1986 World Cup winner whose skills in the game were second to none.

Apart from the people and the soccer federation of Argentina, tributes have poured in from all over the world for the soccer magician.

“Today is an unbelievably sad day. Our Diego left us. Our hearts – of all of us who loved him for how he was, and for what he represented – have stopped beating for a moment. Our silence, our tears, our pain is the only thing we are feeling deep inside us at this time.

“Diego may be eternal now, but for forever, Diego will also have a most prominent place in the incredible story of all football fairy tales. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, dear Diego. We love you”, FIFA President Gianni Infantino noted in a tribute to the soccer great.

In a personal tribute, current captain of the Argentina national team and Spanish giants Barcelona, Lionel Messi said: “It's a very sad day for all Argentinians and for football. He leaves us but he doesn't leave us, because Diego is eternal. I will keep all the beautiful moments I lived through with him, and I want to take this opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”

Brazilian great Pele said: “What sad news. I have lost a great friend and the world has lost a legend. There's still so much to be said, but for now, may God give strength to his relatives. One day I hope we can play football together in the sky.”

“Today I say goodbye to a friend and the world says goodbye to an eternal genius. One of the greatest of all time. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too soon but leaves a legacy that has no limits and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace, great. You will never be forgotten”, Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo noted in his tribute.

Brazilian international Neymar Junior who also added his voice said: “You’ll always be in our memories, you left your legacy. Football thanks you. Rest in peace, legend.”

African great Roger Milla was also in shock when he heard the passing of the great Maradona. “I can’t believe it. My great friend Diego Maradona passed away today. Terrible news. Sad year. Rest In Peace LEGEND. My sincere condolences to his family and the people of Argentina”, he added.
