USWNT dethroned from the top spot of the FIFA/ Coca-Cola World Rankings

The United States Women’s National Team have been dethroned from the top spot of the FIFA/ Coca-Cola World Ranking following their disastrous performance at the just-ended FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Prior to the tournament, the Americans were the best-ranked team in the world and were tipped to continue their strangle hold of the women’s game, but the team failed to progress to the quarter-final after succumbing to Sweden in the round of 16.

The Swedes did not only beat the Americans in the World Cup, but they have also dethroned them from the top spot of the FIFA rankings as they currently sit at the summit of the rankings following their heroic performances at the World Cup that saw them place third in the competition.

After winning the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Spain made a stunning jump in the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking (2nd, up 4). Indeed, La Roja could have even clinched pole position had they not missed out on the 35 points at stake in their heavy 4-0 defeat to Japan in their final group-stage game.

Other movers in the top ten of the global standings are the Netherlands (7th, up 2) and Germany (6th, down 4), the latter having failed to progress beyond the group stage for the first time at the finals. Elsewhere, Canada (10th, down 3) also suffered the consequences of their early exit in the World Cup.
